Quality Control Procedures
At Pavilion Compounding Pharmacy quality control and quality assurance are very important to us in order to provide our patients exceptional compounds.
Quality starts with training and each of our compounding pharmacists have been trained through Professional Compounding Centers of America, both in Primary training and in specialized areas including: Sterile, Veterinary, Bio-Identical, and Pain Management disciplines. Additionally, we continue our education and training with various seminars and continuing education opportunities throughout the year.
For nonsterile preparations the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) states “compounded preparations are to be prepared to ensure that each preparation shall contain not less than 90.0 percent and not more than 110.0 percent of the theoretically calculated and labeled quantity of active ingredient per unit weight or volume.”
Standard Operating Procedures for capsules compounds is a simple in-house procedure we employ such as weighing capsules. Each lot of capsules is calculated for a theoretical weight, and a random sample of ten capsules are individually weighed to validate the procedure. Certain compounds, such as the synthetic T3T4 capsules, go thru a two-step quality process, first for the mixture which involves a very small amount of active drug, and the second formal test for the final capsules. For Sterile Compounds, USP 797 is employed which covers compounded sterile preparations, and is more specific when it comes to testing requirements. Testing is specified for two specific situations: 1) to extend storage periods and 2) for finished preparation release checks and tests under prescribed circumstances.
Each Sterile Preparation is evaluated and determined for the most appropriate methodology for sterility assurance. Both in-house checks and formal potency/sterility testing are performed. Pavilion Compounding Pharmacy uses Eagle Analytical Laboratories, www.eagleanalytical.com, for many of our quality control tests.
